Writing anything about a mother is never easy. A mother is the epitome of sacrifice, penance, and unconditional love. In this novel, Maa (Mother), I have tried to write about a mother’s journey and her emotions.
A human life goes through four stages, of which the most challenging is old age, when the body starts to gradually give up. The younger generation, caught in the vibrancy of youth, often cannot feel or understand the pain and struggles their elders go through.
Today’s children too don’t get to stay with their parents for long. As they grow, they move away for education. After marriage, they get engrossed in their own families. In such a scenario, what will happen to our elders when there is no one left to understand their emotions or take care of them? This is a deeply troubling question, because one day we all must go through old age.
By the time the youth begin to understand the realities of aging, it’s often too late. In such times, whose compassion will our elders rely on? Is this what the modern era has come to? Regardless of how advanced our times may be, we must remain empathetic towards our elders, for only then will true humanity survive. Otherwise, we will lose ourselves.
It is undeniably true that parents are divine beings. Serving them never goes in vain. No matter how much we serve the world, if we fail to serve our parents, if we cannot say a few loving words to them in their final days, or lend support to their trembling hands — our lives are in vain. Those who get the fortune to serve their parents are indeed truly blessed.
I never wish to keep good thoughts confined within me. That is why any thought that brings inspiration or motivation to move forward in life, I will always try to bring to you through my writing. This is my promise to all of you.
With this sentiment, I bow wholeheartedly to Lord Shiva, Mata Parvati, Lord Ganesha, the remover of all obstacles, and Maa Saraswati, the goddess of wisdom. I now present to you my heartfelt creation, the novel “Maa”.

Rashmi Rameshwar Gupta is a teacher by profession, currently serving as a lecturer at the Government Higher Secondary School in Lingiyadih. Endowed with diverse talents, she is known as a writer, poet, skilled stage anchor, social worker, and folk singer. Her songs and articles are regularly broadcast on All India Radio and Doordarshan. She has also worked as a column writer for the daily newspaper Dainik Bhaskar.
Her published works include the novel “Maa” (Hindi Edition), which received the Amazon Bestseller Award and an OMG Record in 2024; “Siyan Man Ke Seekh” (Parts 1 and 2 – the first inspirational series in the Chhattisgarhi language); “Ek Deep Jala Dena” (a Hindi poetry collection); and “Antarman” (a memoir). Her audio cassette “Hamar Bhuiyan” is available on YouTube.
Honored with the Dr. Mukutdhar Pandey State Teacher Award, Rashmi ji has also received numerous other accolades including the Nari Shakti Samman, Pratibha Ratna, Samaj Gaurav, and Chhattisgarh Ratna awards.
